I’ve written articles and contributed chapters to a number of books on different themes and am listing them here:
Bakker, G. and Hodgett, T. ‘Into All the Parish: Pioneering practices for every local church‘. Coming soon! Publication with Church House Publishing 2026. This is a book about the five key dynamics of Pioneering Parishes and how implementing them in your congregation can help shift the energy of the ordinary parish church outwards to connect with people in the local community, offering spiritual care to a wider range of the local population. ‘Playfulness’, in Ed Olsworth-Peter and Zscheile, D. (eds), The Starter’s Way (October 2025). This text contains 15 or so short chapters from writers and practitioners in the UK and US who scope out the spiritual pre-conditions as well as the inner qualities and outer practices of life that most effectively enable individuals and groups to start new contextual Christian communities. My chapter is about the place of playfulness in the posture of pioneers. It portrays God as playful, suggests where we see this playfulness in Scripture and tradition, and explains why it’s necessary for starting new things. It gives examples of playfulness in people I know, and gives hints about how to become more playful yourself.

‘Being pilgrim into the unknown’, in Bradbury, Hamley and Smith (eds), Being the People of God: Missional Ecclesiology for Uncertain Times (July 2025). This book is segmented into three parts: Being Worship, Being Witness, and Being Pilgrim. Having been a community vicar in Portishead for six years with the title ‘Team Pilgrim’ I related to the pilgrim section which was edited by Paul Bradbury. The chapter weaves the pilgrimage of my own life around the topic of the pilgrimage the Church (specifically the Church of England) is caught up in today towards the Church it is under God’s hand becoming. More threads in the weave are added by an exploration of three journeys literal and metaphorical in Scripture: the Exodus from Egypt, the journey of the Son of God from spirit to flesh, and the journey of the early disciples towards the establishment of the early church. It covers topics of grief, loss, death and letting go; contextualisation of form and content, courage and imagination; play, experimentation, improvisation and the surprising interventions of the Holy Spirit.

‘Co-creating churches playfully’, in Will Foulger and Josh Cockayne (eds) ‘New Churches: A Theology’ (November 2024). This short chapter presents the results of a small scale research project with pioneers from the Bath and Wells Diocesan Pioneer Project. It shows how five of seven pioneers considered they carried out their ministry in the mode of play, and had a sense of God being ‘at play’ with them as they sought to connect with people who were unconnected (and unlikely to connect) with church. It highlights the affective nature of this approach which brought high levels of joy, awe, wonder, excitement, laughter, freedom and fun.
‘The Big Free Jubilee Lunch’ in Cathy Ross and Humphrey Southern (eds) Bearing Witness in Hope (SCM Press 2020). In this short chapter I relate the story of the Big Free Jubilee Lunch held in Portishead for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and explain the theology of sacramental evangelism that underlay the experiment of inviting the whole town for a free lunch.

This chapter is an account of a group I started with a friend and colleague called ‘Baby Days’ exploring the spirituality of pregnancy, birth and first parenthood. It contains the outline of weekly sessions we held. You can see how this idea was picked up by Rosie Horridge in the video below.
